JOE CANTY
Joe is a trusted advisor to Peter Maher Racing. This well known and respected horseman is vastly experienced in all aspects of racing and has a particular interest in the flat. He has lived on the Curragh all his life and is a fabulous judge of a horse's readiness and ability. Joe has a wealth of knowledge on form and is an expert reader of a race. Horses and people alike respond to Joe's quiet and calm manner.
We are fortunate to have Joe's experience in the racing industry to draw on. Joe's Father (also Joe Canty) was a champion jockey who rode three and a half Irish Derby winners (one was a dead heat!!). His training career started as assistant to his Uncle (Rathbride trainer Michael Dawson). Joe's first winner came from the American owned Elbow Bend at a time when Joe was still riding over hurdles. His principal owner throughout his training career was Nicholas Stassen. Notable successes included Head of the House wining the Irish Lincolnshire, Sallustar winning five and holding the track record for 7 furlongs at the Phoenix Park. The famous Galmoy won the Jameson Gold Cup at Fairyhouse for Joe while Glowing Star and Often Ahead were respectively placed in the Derby and the Oaks.
